Triestina - Juventus 0-1

It was an historic occasion as Triestina and Juventus lined up to face one other for the first time in 47 years. With one of the strongest defensive records in the championship, the homes side was looking to cause an upset against the in-form Bianconeri, but Deschamps’ men had a sixth successive Serie B victory in their sights and weren’t taking any chances. The Frenchman kept faith in the attacking pairing of David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero, still on the hunt for his 200th Juventus goal, while Giannichedda replaced Paro as Zanetti’s partner in the heart of the Juventus midfield.


Triestina started on the front foot, Boumsong forced to clear from his own six yard box in the first minute. The home side won a series of corners in the opening exchanges, but the Juve back-line were equal to the task, clearing the ball from danger with composure. The Triestina midfielders were intent on making things difficult, but the Bianconeri gradually began to take control of possession, Nedved winning a free-kick in a dangerous area in the 11th minute. It was prime Del Piero territory, but the captain was unable to keep his effort down. On the quarter hour mark, Birindelli curled a tight cross into the box after a clever lay off from Del Piero. Trezeguet sneaked in front of his marker but his cute header was gathered down low by Rossi. Two minutes later, the Frenchman found himself in space on the left edge of the box but he lashed his effort high and wide of the goal. Triestina answered back, denying the Bianconeri space in the middle third and fashioning some openings of their own. Unfortunately for the Alabardati Kovac and Boumsong were in commanding form at the back, limiting the home side to long range attempts, and on the half hour mark the tide turned back in Juve’s favour. Chiellini looped a delightful first-time cross in from the left touchline in the 31st minute which just evaded the head of Trezeguet, but a minute later the Bianconeri were in front. Nedved edged in front of his marker on the left side of the area after Triestina had failed to clear a Camoranesi free-kick, the Czech winger dinked the ball into the middle and Zanetti was there to side foot the ball home from next to the penalty spot (0-1). It was the midfielder’s second goal of the week. Nedved looked extremely lively on the left wing, carving out space almost at will, but Triestina managed to hold on until the half-time whistle.

Deschamps’ men arrived in Treviso tonight in search of their fifth straight championship victory. With his players back from international duty, the Frenchman had said in the build up that only a win would do, and he put his faith in the strike partnership of Trezeguet and Del Piero once more, supported by Nedved and Camoranesi on the flanks. The match had an added flavour, with all eyes on the captain as he looked to score his 200th Juventus goal just 36km from the small town where he grew up.

Treviso started brightly, Beghetto threatening in the 2nd minute with a header just wide of Buffon’s goal as the Bianconeri looked to find their feet. In the 7th minute Zanetti tried his luck from distance but his effort sailed high and wide, and three minutes later, Nedved cut in from the left wing and forced Avramov to make his first save of the night with a powerful low shot. Juventus grew in confidence and began dictating the play, with Nedved and Camoranesi orchestrating from the wings. In the 20th minute, it was the latter who came close to opening the scoring, just beaten to the ball at the back post as he rose to head in Del Piero’s chipped cross from the left hand side of the box. Two minutes later Del Piero looked to have completed his double century but his effort was ruled out for off-side. In the 28th minute the captain was sent through by Zanetti but he couldn’t direct his shot past the large frame of Avramov. Dominating possession from midfield it was only a matter of time before Juventus made the breakthrough and in the 31st minute, they did just that. Camoranesi spotted Zanetti free on the edge of the box, and his cut back from the byline was stroked into the back of the net on the half-volley with flawless technique (0-1). The Bianconeri looked to double their lead just before the break, Camoranesi trying his luck with a half-volley of his own after racing onto the end of Balzaretti’s floated cross, but this time the ball flashed wide of the goal. Treviso looked rattled and were relieved to hear Farina’s half-time whistle just a minute later.

As with the first 45 minutes, it was Treviso who were fastest out of the blocks. In the opening five minutes of the half Buffon pulled off two magnificent reflex saves to deny the home side an equaliser, first from Vascak, then Fava, but it was Juventus who were next to put the ball into the back of the net. In the 51st minute Camoranesi released Trezeguet in the box with a neat reverse pass, but the Frenchman’s emphatic finish was ruled out for off-side. Buffon came to the rescue again as the game neared the hour mark, equal to the combined efforts of Vascak and Beghetto. In the 63rd minute Del Piero dribbled his way into the box but his run was brought to a halt at the crucial moment by the Treviso defence. Buffon dived to his right athletically in the 71st minute to parry Viali’s powerful long range free-kick and in the 73rd minute, Birindelli made way for Chiellini, with Balzaretti moving to the right of defence. Juventus looked to regain control of the match, and in the 82nd minute Del Piero and Camoranesi combined well to create an opening from a corner. Chiellini was there in the middle but he couldn’t make a connection with the winger’s cross. Seconds later, Del Piero raced past two men on the edge of the area before attempting to chip the ball back into the middle. There was no one there to supply the finish and in the 83rd minute, Marchionni replaced Camoranesi. Two minutes later, Trezeguet latched onto Paro’s angled ball into the box but he dragged his first time effort wide of the far post. As the game entered its final stages, Del Piero beat his man and rounded Avramov in the area. The keeper managed to narrow the angle and the captain was forced to try something special, dinking a floated right chip towards the top left hand corner on the turn. The ball dipped just over the bar but Del Piero wasn’t finished, trying his luck from distance in injury time. Avramov was on hand to make the save but it wasn’t enough to stop Juventus
