Much-maligned Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco has defended the signings of midfield flops Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes last summer.
Tiago & Almiron
Almiron and Tiago were signed from Empoli and Lyon for a combined 22m with the intention of being Juve’s first-choice centre midfield partnership.
However both have struggled dreadfully, with Almiron shipped off on loan to Monaco in January, and Tiago certain to be sold at the end of the season.
"When we bought them almost everyone claimed that we had made the right choice,” said Secco.
“Almiron came from two excellent seasons at Empoli. And Tiago is a talented player who has been important.”
Amauri & Flamini
Secco then was asked about the possible arrival of Amauri and Matthieu Flamini this summer.
“We will see [about Amauri]. It is possible,” he stated.
“Flamini is a free agent, he is wanted by many clubs, including Juve, but it is not easy to get him.”
Giovinco, Marchisio, De Ceglie
Secco also confirmed that the on-loan Sebastiano Giovinco, Claudio Marchisio and Paolo De Ceglie would be returning to Juve next season.
There had been speculation that the transfer chief was trying to offload the trio to Palermo in exchange for Amauri.
“Giovinco, Marchisio and De Ceglie will return yes. Davide Lanzafame, who is on-loan at Bari is playing very well, but we will send him for experience at a team in Serie A,” he concluded.
