Massimo Oddo will be laid low for at least a fortnight after coming down with a serious bout of bronchitis, revealed Lazio today.
The defender has been diagnosed with the pulmonary illness and told he must stay in bed for a week, so it will be a while before he can resume full training and take on a competitive match.
It means the Italian international, who had only recently earned a recall to the Azzurri squad, will miss the Serie A encounters with Siena and Livorno as well as the Coppa Italia meeting with Cittadella.
Meanwhile, Coach Delio Rossi is hopeful the 3-2 victory away to Empoli can be the turning point in Lazio’s campaign.
“I think this result can make us understand that we can play just as well outside the Stadio Olimpico as long as we take it one game at a time,” said the tactician. “It’ll be even tougher against Siena, but with Fabio Liverani on this form, we can achieve great things. I sincerely hope he can be called up for the Italy squad.”
Rossi also warned that the issue of racist chanting in stadiums, and the FIGC’s proposal to start all matches five minutes late in protest, cannot be resolved so easily.
“I don’t see the point of delaying kick-off. These supporters are known to the police and the clubs, so all they’d need to do is prevent them from entering the stadium. If they do allow them in, then this is the situation you’re going to run into.”
Messina defender Marc Zoro threatened to walk off the pitch during the 2-1 defeat to Inter on Sunday after receiving racist abuse from a section of the Nerazzurri fans.
