FIFA President Sepp Blatter has warned Paolo Di Canio that he may face serious consequences for his recent Roman salute. "We must exclude some players from our family," he said.
Speaking in Tokyo at the World Club Championship, Blatter revealed that FIFA had compiled a dossier on Di Canio and warned that they would be clamping down on players responsible for acts of racism or discrimination.
"We now have this item in our files," Blatter told a gathering of invited journalists on Friday. "My reaction is that we have to be very tough against all discrimination in our game.
"I cannot make an assessment of fact on Di Canio yet as I only know what has been reported," he continued. "But in such cases we must also exclude players from our family."
Di Canio inflamed an already incendiary atmosphere at Livorno on Sunday by offering an antagonistic fascist Roman salute to travelling Lazio fans upon being substituted to the fury of the fervent left-wing Livorno faithful.
This was the latest in a series of indiscretions that have peppered the controversial 37-year-old’s playing career.
Only last January he was fined £7,000 by the Italian FA for a similar gesture during the Rome derby. The temperamental midfielder was also banned for 11 matches and fined £100,000 during his time in England, when he pushed over a referee playing for Sheffield Wednesday against Arsenal.
The fact that Di Canio has remained defiant about his actions, he said that he will greet his beloved Lazio fans in similar fashion in future and called upon the Biancocelesti to fight off any disciplinary action, will be viewed upon dimly by football’s world governing body - who have promised that persistent offenders will receive harsh penalties.
"Definitely, the only sanction you can take against racism is the deduction of points, suspension or expulsion from competition," explained Blatter. "Or even relegation to the next League.
"It's a shame for sport. A financial sentence is nothing - we have to be really tough."
