Fiorentina have made an approach to Lazio for out-of-favour goalkeeper Matteo Sereni, the Roman club announced today.
Although it was widely anticipated that the Gigliati would table a bid for Inter’s former Viola star Francesco Toldo, it seems that the Tuscan outfit have instead opted to take the Lazio man out on loan until the end of the season.
Fiorentina are in the market for a ‘keeper after Sebastien Frey injured knee ligaments in a collision with Marcelo Zalayeta, during his side’s Italian Cup defeat to Juventus on Tuesday night.
With the Frenchman out for at least three months, Cesare Prandelli’s men have approached Lazio for Sereni – who has recently been relegated to third-choice guardian.
The 29-year-old has barely featured this season, making just two appearances for Delio Rossi’s men, but the Viola have preferred him to Toldo whose wages are considered too high.
"Fiorentina have asked us for Sereni," confirmed Biancocelesti sporting director Carlo Osti.
"They would like to take him on loan if we decide that we would like him to be the long-term successor to Angelo Peruzzi here.
"For now it’s something that’s been suggested," he added. "Fiorentina have enquired about his availability and now the problem is ours not theirs.
"Fiorentina have singled out the name of Sereni as well as two other ‘keepers, but I think we will resolve this matter soon as the offer could help us out too," continued Osti.
"We are in a position to loan Sereni to the Viola if everything ties in and the player agrees."
With the former Ipswich Town shot-stopper unlikely to want to spend any more time warming the bench at the Stadio Olimpico, he could be on his way to Florence as early as tomorrow.
